About these colouring pages

Butterflies are made for colouring because their wings are symmetrical: whatever pattern goes on one side is mirrored on the other. These butterfly colouring pages include simple outlines with large wing sections, butterflies resting on flowers, and detailed wings packed with small shapes.

Kids ages 3 to 5 do well with the bold, simple designs, while kids 8 and up and adults usually prefer the intricate wings. Spring is the busiest time for these pages, and they pair nicely with a classroom unit on the butterfly life cycle: egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, butterfly. Monarchs make a great talking point, since many fly thousands of miles each fall to spend the winter in Mexico. For a quick symmetry lesson, have kids colour only one wing, then copy the pattern onto the other side.

Every page prints on US Letter or A4 paper and is free for home and classroom use.
