The newspaper hat. Four folds, no scissors.
Start with a rectangular sheet, such as US Letter or A4, turned sideways.
Step 1. Fold the top edge down to the bottom edge. Crease, then leave it folded. The crease is the top edge now.
Step 2. Fold the two top corners down so they meet on the center line.
Step 3. You should see a triangle on top of a band. Fold the front bottom band up over the triangle.
Step 4. Turn the hat over and fold the other band up the same way. Open the bottom so it sits on a head.
A small cup from one square. It holds water for a little while if the folds are sharp.
Start with a square. Fold one corner of a rectangle down to the opposite edge and tear or cut off the extra strip.
Step 1. Fold the square in half on the diagonal. Keep the long edge at the bottom and the point at the top.
Step 2. Fold the left point across so it touches the right edge.
Step 3. Fold the right point across so it touches the left edge. The two flaps cross in the middle.
Step 4. Fold the front top point down over the crossed flaps. Turn the cup over and fold the back point down the same way.
Three folds. The ears are the side points and the nose is the bottom tip.
Start with a square, the same way as the cup.
Step 1. Fold the square in half on the diagonal. Leave the point at the top.
Step 2. Fold the left and right corners up to make ears. They should stick out past the sides.
Step 3. Fold the bottom point up a short way. That fold is the muzzle. Draw two eyes and a nose if you want them.
The hat, opened into a boat. It floats for a minute in a sink or puddle.
Use the paper hat, or follow the first four hat folds and then continue here.
Step 1. Hold the hat by the bottom corners and pull them apart until the paper flattens into a diamond.
Step 2. Fold the bottom front point up to the top point. Turn it over and fold the back point up too.
Step 3. Pull the bottom corners apart again and flatten the paper into a smaller diamond.
Step 4. Gently pull the top points outward. The diamond opens into a boat. Pinch the bottom so it holds its shape.
