Two children in scarves and hats sit side by side on a wooden sled with curled runners, riding down a snowy slope. Pine trees and a faraway mountain fill the background. The figures are small and the page has a fair amount of detail in the clothing and the sled, so it suits ages six to nine.

Coloring ideas

  • Give each child a different color of coat, hat and scarf so they stand out against the snow.
  • Color the sled in red or blue, with a brown or gray wooden frame.
  • Leave the snow white and add pale blue shadows at the bottom of the hill.
  • Use two greens for the pine trees and a light gray for the mountain.

Quick learning activity

Sleds slide easily because snow is slippery and the runners are smooth. Ask your child to think of other things that slide well and things that do not, such as a rug or a gravel path, and to say why. It is a simple start to talking about friction.
