This page has no fairy in it. It shows the home she might live in: a wide tree trunk with a round wooden door, two small windows with crossed frames, and a chimney sticking out of a spotted mushroom roof. A ladder leans on the side, two lanterns hang by the door, and grass tufts frame the base.

There is more to colour here than on the single-figure pages. The bark, door planks, window panes and roof spots all have their own small areas, so it suits children who like to work slowly.

Ideas for coloring

  • Use two or three browns for the trunk and a darker brown for the door planks.
  • Colour the windows yellow to suggest a light inside, and the lanterns a warmer orange.
  • Make the roof a bright colour with white spots, or match it to a real mushroom such as a fly agaric.
  • Draw a path, flowers or a fence around the base once you have finished.

About hollow trees

Old trees often develop hollows where a branch broke off or the heartwood rotted. The tree can live for decades with a hollow trunk because the living growth layer sits just under the bark. Owls, bats, bees and squirrels use these hollows for shelter, so a hollow tree is a real habitat.
