About these coloring pages
These solar system coloring pages show the sun, the eight planets and the small bodies that travel around it. Each planet is drawn as a plain round shape with only the features a child can really see in photographs: Jupiter's bands and round storm, Saturn's rings, the craters on the moon and the rocky red ground of Mars.
The pages work well next to a school topic on space. Before coloring, ask which planet is closest to the sun and which is biggest, then let your child choose colors that match what they have seen in pictures. The page with all eight planets in a row is a good place to practice the order from the sun, and the orbit page shows that every planet follows its own path.
The pages carry no printed words, so a parent or teacher can add names and facts in their own way. Notes with each design suggest what to talk about. Simple planets suit ages 4 to 6, and the busier scenes with moons, comets and asteroids suit ages 7 to 9. Every page prints on US Letter or A4 paper and is free for home and classroom use.
