A tiny fairy in a short dress stands in front of a tulip that is far bigger than she is. She holds the edge of one petal as if she is about to lift it. Her wings are visible behind her shoulders, and she is barefoot on the ground.
The tulip fills most of the page. Its large, smooth petals are easy to colour in even blocks, while the fairy is small enough to need a finer pencil for her face, hair and dress.
Ideas for coloring
- Shade each petal from a darker colour at the base to a lighter one at the tip.
- Try a real tulip colour such as red, yellow or deep purple, or stripe the petals.
- Choose a dress colour that contrasts with the flower so she does not disappear into it.
- Leave the wings pale and add a thin line of colour along the edges.
About tulips
Tulips grow from bulbs that are planted in autumn and flower in spring after a cold winter. Wild tulips come from Central Asia, and the Netherlands became famous for breeding them in the 1600s. A tulip flower normally has six petal-like parts, and the stem keeps growing a little after the flower is cut.
