This is a detailed drawing of a T. rex standing among broad leaves and ferns. The skin has scaly texture, the muscles of the legs are outlined, and the jaw shows individual teeth. The plants are drawn with long veins and layered leaves that give many small areas to fill.

Ideas for coloring

  • Use coloured pencils and blend two or three browns on the body.
  • Colour the leaves in several greens, with darker shades behind.
  • Add shadows under the belly and legs to give weight to the animal.
  • Use a fine pen to finish the smallest scales.

Good to know

T. rex had around 60 teeth, some as long as a banana including the root. They were thick and strong enough to crush bone. The plants in the drawing are only a guess at its habitat, since the Late Cretaceous had ferns, conifers and early flowering plants.
