The bed of this dump truck is raised at an angle, and a pile of round rocks is about to slide out. The cab sits low at the front with a small window and a grille, and three axles carry the heavy frame.

Ideas for coloring

  • Colour each rock a different grey, brown or tan so the pile looks uneven.
  • Use a strong yellow for the truck body, as on many building sites.
  • Draw dust clouds or a gravel ground at the back where the rocks land.
  • Leave the tyres black and add grey centres.

Why the bed tilts

A dump truck uses hydraulic cylinders under the bed. Oil pushed into the cylinders makes them extend and lift the front of the bed, so gravity does the rest of the work. This is how quarries and building sites move sand, gravel and rock quickly.
